Catherine Barter was a spinster during the Victorian era who in the 1850's travelled the unsettled regions of South Africa and survived to retell the story. It has been said that her spirit and endurance in this journey surprised her associates during that time. Of course at this time women rarely conducted business or traveled without a husband.Part of the interest this book as garnered is due to the insight it provides into the society of the Zulu tribe before their ways had been greatly modified by white settlers and adventurers. As is demonstrated in this book, despite Zulus being feared as warriors they demonstrated kindness to travelers, and were highly skilled in prospering with their cattle industry. This book shows that their villages were considered as stopover camps for white hunters and sojourners of that era. This rare book is of great cultural, historical, and anthropological interest.
